A few principals in our school district have decided that you can't have too much of a good thing when it comes to leveling books. They are demanding that librarians level the entire school library. Students will have to check out books solely on the basis of its level. Teachers and literacy specialists know that this is not only an incorrect use of leveled books, but it completely takes the joy out of a child's choice in books. Can you address this issue so we can forward it on to principals?

Libraries and leveling have two different purposes.

Teachers use leveled books for Guided Reading where children are working at the cutting edge of their literacy learning, as guided by the teacher, to increase their strategic processing during reading. Most children have a wide range of leveled material in their classroom to choose for their independent reading time in the classroom.

Libraries have a wide range of genre and books for the enrichment it gives to the personal lives of children in addition to the educational value. They appeal to children's interests and enjoyment and don't need to be at children's reading levels. Children can learn a lot by studying illustrations and pictures in a book that captures their interest. Books help to develop their imagination. They need both experiences. If they choose a book from the library that is above their reading ability, they will probably ask a parent, caregiver, or teacher to read it to them. Having all books identified by level in the library could inhibit their choices.
