I am having a hard time understanding this for some reason. In the program guide it talks about get the lowest kids in the grade level and service them through LLI. I don't understand how students who don't know any letters, sounds, can't rhyme, blend or identify sight words will benefit from the intervention reading program. Should it be students who can at least identify their letters and sounds? I just feel like letters, sounds, and blending would need to be mastered before you through them into a program where they are going to be building words, writing, and reading. If they can't do any of that how is it beneficial to start them on Level A books?

Another question is should non-readers be in the program? Or should it be students who are on a frustrational level A?

LLI is designed for the children you describe. LLI is to teach them how to look at print. You will have 10 Getting Starting Lessons where you read to them, with them and then they will read books those books independently. They will be writing about their reading, learning and using their names, have letter and word work and have strong, systematic phonics. They will learn to read, learn to rhyme, hear and record sounds and letters, identify sight words and do everything you have listed. They want to learn to read and write; they can and they will. You are not throwing them into a program, you are providing strong support, teaching them how print works by reading books and writing and you are teaching them about words, letters and sounds. Start with what they know and link their new learning to the known.
