Middle school assessment needs are discussed in a Q & A format by literacy leaders Irene Fountas and Gay Su
Pinnell. As literacy demands increase exponentially in middle school, and many students with weak skills, limited
vocabulary, and lack of experiences with text require support, it is critical for teachers to know how to provide
instructional support. They address the
• importance of having assessment that helps pinpoint the areas of reading difficulty (fluency,
comprehension, decoding, types of text, etc.)
• understanding how to interpret the data to plan effective instruction
• assessment resources that can assist teachers, specifically the Benchmark Assessment System 2.
